If a Branding "Expert" Says Any of These 5 Things — Run. 🚩

After years of working inside the branding industry, I've seen what clients never get to see. Here's what actually happens behind the mood boards and discovery calls.

🚩 Red Flag #1: They lead with aesthetics, not strategy. "What's your favorite color?" is not a brand discovery question. If the first conversation is about fonts and mood boards before they've asked about your audience, your positioning, or your revenue goals — they're a designer pretending to be a strategist.

🚩 Red Flag #2: They can't explain WHY. Every choice should have a reason rooted in your business. If you ask "why this tagline?" and the answer is "it just feels right" — that's intuition dressed up as expertise. You deserve rationale, not vibes.

🚩 Red Flag #3: They show you a portfolio of pretty brands, not successful ones.Beautiful ≠ effective. Ask them: did that brand help the client charge more? Attract better clients? Stand out in a crowded market? If they look confused, that tells you everything.

🚩 Red Flag #4: They use jargon to avoid accountability. "Elevating your brand essence" and "unlocking authentic resonance" mean nothing if you can't measure the outcome. Real brand strategists talk about perception, positioning, and conversion — not mystical transformations.

🚩 Red Flag #5: They don't push back on you. A great branding pro will challenge your assumptions. If they just nod and deliver what you asked for, you're not getting strategy — you're getting execution. And you're overpaying for it.

Consultants, coaches, and solopreneurs — your brand is your most expensive asset and your most powerful sales tool.

Don't hand it to someone who can't protect it.
